Natural Science 19th May 2020

Hello, little beasts: 



Antes de nada, creo que hay algo nuevo en el blog de la biblioteca que no os gustaría perderos (click).


Some Natural Science? Ok. 

You already know a lot of things about vertebrates, those animals that have a backbone and a skeleton. I thought that we could start with some skeletons... It is going to be a bit tricky. I am going to show you some photographs with skeletons. You have to tell me the animal group (mammal, bird, fish, reptile or amphibian) and try to guess the animal (this is harder). It is a bit scary :)

1. Tell me the animal group and try to identify the animal.

2. I'd like you to create your own word map to talk about vertebrates. You can use the next template to write some basic facts about mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians (no se trata de escribir todo lo que sabéis de cada grupo, pero sí alguna característica básica). 
3. Last week you did a worksheet about amphibians (con algunos fallos, lo siento). Let's try to review some of the things we know about fish. On the link below there is a very interesting web page. Click, dive into the water and choose one animal, then do a bit of research about it (where it lives, diet, size...).


4. Para acabar, os dejo un nuevo juego (Kahoot!) preparado por nuestros amigos del albergue. Espero que os guste.

Natural Science 11th May 2020

Good morning, mammals: 

I hope you had a very nice weekend. Welcome to a new week, a shorter week. Today we have to do a bit of Natural Science. 

You know we are studying animals. Before we start to deal with invertebrates, I think it would be a good idea to go over some of the things we have learnt about mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians. 

1. I have prepared a quiz to see how much you have learnt. Give it a go on the link below.

3. I have prepared this activity to go over some characteristics of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. You just have to read very carefully and then tick (sometimes you have to choose more than one animal group).


MAMMALS
BIRDS
FISH
AMPHIBIANS
REPTILES
They have feathers





They lay eggs





They have a skeleton





Most of them are oviparous, but some of them are viviparous or ovoviviparous.





They use their gills to breathe when they are babies…but not when they are adults





They have an organ called swim bladder





They have air sacs in their respiratory system





Some of them slither





Their body is covered by scales





They have moist skin







4. I think amphibians group is a bit hard to understand. Try to do the next interactive worksheet (ya sabéis que este tipo de fichas a veces da fallos o no acepta como correctas algunas respuestas... Si os da problemas, me mandáis una foto de lo que hayáis escrito).

Natural Science 5th May 2020

Good morning, little vertebrates:

(feliz martes poético a todos)

I hope you are Ok. Today we finish our Natural Science section about vertebrates (en los próximos días os iré proponiendo diferentes actividades para repasar lo que hemos trabajado acerca de los vertebrados, y así ver si lo hemos entendido todo bien). 
The fifth group of animals that have a backbone is FISH. Have a look at the next word map with information you can read on PB page 44. 


As I have said, fish are the biggest group of vertebrates. If you have a look at the next chart you will understand what I mean: 


As you can see, it is a very big group. 

The next video offers a nice summary of Fish (body, nutrition, respiration with gills, reproduction...)


1. After reading the information and watching the video, read and answer the next questions:

a) What do fish use to swim? (PB 44:1).
b) Where do most fish fertilise their eggs? How do they protect them from predators? (PB 44: 2).
c) Draw how fish breathe and label the different organs involved (mouth, gills, capillaries...)

2. Go to the link below and choose one fish (there are sixteen). Click, read and write some information about it in your notebook: what they eat, size, where they live and some interesting facts.

3. On the link below you can visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium (California) and watch live webcams with some of their animals (sharks, jellyfish, sardines...). I hope you like it.

Natural Science 27th April 2020

Good morning, my friends!

Welcome to a new week. I think today you can go for a walk again... Enjoy it. 

Let's do a bit of Natural Science. We have to continue studying vertebrates. Today, amphibians. But first I want to share with you some photographs Lucas sent me. Do you like reptiles? Here you can see two ;)



And now AMPHIBIANS.

This is the information you can read on PB page 43.



One of the most interesting things in amphibians is how they change. The next video explains this animal group and all those changes, called metamorphosis (los cambios que sufre un anfibio desde que es un bebé hasta que alcanza la vida adulta).



After reading the information and watching the video, read and answer the next questions. 

1. What are the different ways amphibians can breathe (PB 43:1)?
2. Why do amphibians lay so many eggs (PB 43:2)?
3. What do we call a baby frog?

Next, go to the link below and choose one amphibian. Click, read and write some information about it in your notebook: what they eat, size, where they live and some interesting facts. 



Para acabar, os dejo una nueva actividad preparada por nuestros monitores del albergue. Se trata de un trivial de anfibios, así que nos puede venir bien para aprender algo más acerca de este fascinante grupo de vertebrados.

Natural Science 14th April 2020

Buenos días a todos. 

Espero que, dentro de lo extraño de estas situaciones, las vacaciones de Semana Santa hayan servido para desconectar de algunas tareas y descansar o, al menos, reducir el ritmo. 

Voy a seguir con la metodología de trabajo que empleamos en las semanas previas a las vacaciones, y seguiré así hasta que vayan llegando instrucciones que puedan plantear un escenario diferente. De momento, todos sabemos lo mismo. 

Antes de dirigirme a los chicos me gustaría comentar un par de cosas. 
En primer lugar, aun hay varias familias que no han respondido al correo electrónico en el que envié las calificaciones de la 2ª evaluación (en uno de los documentos adjuntos se solicitaba ese mensaje de confirmación). Es una cuestión administrativa necesaria en esta situación. 
En segundo lugar, yo voy a seguir corrigiendo todas las tareas que reciba. Entiendo que cada casa es un mundo y no siempre se pueden llevar al día, pero lo ideal desde el punto de vista "pedagógico" es que el alumno pueda recibir la corrección poco después de que haya realizado la tarea. Valoro y agradezco el esfuerzo que todas las familias están haciendo en este sentido y animo a que sea así para que dichas correcciones sean útiles al alumno. Para los casos puntuales y particulares, ya he estado en contacto individual con muchos de vosotros. Gracias.

How are you today? I have to tell you one thing: you haven't noticed it, but you have grown...You look older, mature...so I think you will have to work a little harder...No! I'm joking. You are doing a great job, so keep up the good work :)

Before we continue with the new section about birds, read the information you already have about mammals and try to do AB page 14: 2. Super easy activity!

Today we are going to talk about the second group of vertebrates: birds. Your PB deals with these contents on page 41, but you can see the same information in the photo below.


We are going to talk about the same aspects in every group of vertebrate animals (nutrition, reproduction, respiration and then some information about their body, skills...). 

(En mi esquema he incluido la palabra "VIDEO" junto a la explicación acerca de la respiración. Las aves tienen unas bolsas o sacos de aire que les ayudan a respirar y a conseguir todo el oxigeno que necesitan. Echad un vistazo a este vídeo que puede ayudar a entenderlo). 



After reading the information you are ready for this: 

1. The next video offers a very good summary of birds (se entiende muy bien, y mucho mejor si activas la opción de subtítulos). Watch it. I'm sure you will learn some new things about how they reproduce, how they eat (different types of beaks...). 




2. After learning about mammals and birds, try to answer the next question (PB page 41:1): 

How are birds similar to mammals? How are they different?
(You can write the information in two columns: similarities and differences). 

3. Go to the link below and choose one bird, click, read and write some information about it in your notebook: what they eat, size, where they live and some interesting facts. There are many birds on that site; choose your favourite if you want to. 


And that is all for today.

Natural Science 30th March 2020

Buenos días, familias. 

Tal y como os dije hace unos días, mi intención es comenzar a ofrecer algunas recomendaciones para el trabajo de nuevos contenidos. La lectura de los nuevos temas en los libros es un buen comienzo, pero para que no se vayan acumulando las dudas, cada día colgaré una entrada intentando ofrecer una visión lo más simplificada posible de cada sección de la unidad. 

Comenzamos hoy con Natural Science, y con la unidad dedicada a los animales. Creo que podemos hacer frente a muchos contenidos de este tema a pesar de la distancia. Sobra decir que cada duda que tengan los alumnos, me la pueden preguntar por correo electrónico (ramoncuevasramirez@gmail.com).

Today we are going to talk about animals. This is a new unit in Natural Science, but you already know many of those contents from last year. 

If you have a look at your PB, you can see that there are two groups: vertebrates and invertebrates. Lets start with vertebrates.


There are five groups of vertebrate animals. Five groups of animals that have a backbone (or spine, or spinal column): mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. 

Today we are going to start with mammals. 

Mammals is the group where we can include many of the animals we like: dogs, cats, tigers, horses, cows, pigs...and of course humans. 

Here you can see some information about three different aspects: NUTRITION (what mammals eat and their different types of teeth), REPRODUCTION (how new mammals are produced and what they eat when they are babies) and RESPIRATION (all mammals use lungs for breathing). There is also a box with information about how they move, their body coverings...
