Social Science 7th May 2020

Hello, cutie pies!

Today is Thursday. Oh, I love Thursdays! It's my favourite day. Do you like Thursdays? Do you? Of course you do!

After that silly greeting, let's do some Social Science.

Some days ago we talked about the water cycle. One of the words on my word map was groundwater (agua subterránea). Today we are going to learn a bit more about that water under the ground.

First we need to understand the difference between porous rocks and impermeable rocks (lo que voy a ir explicando a continuación está en las páginas 50-51 de vuestro libro, pero lo voy a resumir aquí).

POROUS ROCKS are rocks with holes in them.

IMPERMEABLE ROCKS are rocks that do not allow water to pass through (like an umbrella).

Those types or rock are under the ground in different layers.

The aquifers are the deposits of water (natural deposit) under the ground.

The water can get to the surface of the Earth. It can happen naturally through natural springs (manantiales): the groundwater is forced upwards↑↑↑↑↑ and breaks through to the surface.

It is also possible to get water to the surface using a well (pozo). In the past, people used ropes and buckets to collect water from the bottom of the well, but nowadays they use mechanical pumps (faster and more easily).

After reading the information, try to do the next activities:

1. What is the difference between impermeable and porous rocks?

2. Are the next statements true or false?

a) Groundwater is salt water.
b) Wells are natural things.
c) Aquifers are man-made deposits of water.
d) Aquifers are under the ground.
e) It is possible to pump water from an aquifer.
f) Some natural springs become the sources of rivers.
g) Water can't pass through impermeable rocks.
h) Porous rocks are rocks with holes in them.

Most of the water we drink comes from underground aquifers. When there is a lot of pollution, those aquifers can be contaminated. Have a look at these image...

The same happens when you throw away trash in nature. When it rains, water is filtered and gets to the aquifers with some toxic chemicals.

3. Try to do the next activity related to polluted water (AB 19).

That'll be all.

See you tomorrow.
